A question from my five year old: "How does a seed know to start growing when it is planted instead of in the seed packet?" I was explaining well enough, but couldn't answer exactly what triggers the process.

What do we know about the rapidity, nature or effect of the switch of the earth's magnetic polarity? Is it at all possible to be a non event, can we every really be prepared, or, are we, in this era of technical dependency, awaiting an inevitable event of apocalyptic proportions?
