How long did it take for the relations between England and America to recover after the revolutionary war? And what were some significant milestones in that process?

looking at the ammount of men involved in war during ww2, what's the reason the numbers are so much smaller in todays battles in ukraine? We always see footage of max 30 guys and 3 tanks tackle an entrenched position, whereas in ww2 hundreds were fielded for each movement.
