What was life like for an ordinary person during the Mali Empire? With so much wealth flying around and a strong culture, was this a good period in history to be an ordinary person?

Appendicitis is fairly common and easily solved for most. Before the first appendectomy in 1735, did there used to be a lot of deaths from appendicitis-like symptoms (in any culture, country, or time in history), and did people fear a mystery disease that caused lower right pain and death?
