Did ancient cultures treat mental illnesses like schizophrenia as a gift?

The treatment of mental illness (e.g. psychosis or schizophrenia) within tribal communities / ancient cultures - Some spiritual groups like to claim, such a person would be a healer or shaman...i have issues with that line of thought, so bringing it here,,..
