Beginning in the 1880s, King Leopold II of Belgium ruled the Congo Free State as a personal possession, rather than as a colony of Belgium. How commonplace would this have been at the time? Would other monarchs have privately owned large colonial lands, or was this a unique situation?

A well known aspect of D-Day is the British use of specialized vehicles like amphibious tanks that were purpose-built to overcome the difficulties of a naval landing. Would developing gear specifically for naval landings have been a common strategy in earlier conflicts?
