Union forces captured South Carolina coastal areas such as Hilton Head and Port Royal fairly early in the Civil War. Why did they never expand those beachheads and force the Confederates to fight on another front?

Did slaves actually bring things with them to the New World? Over the years, I've read that they brought everything from seeds to banjos. Yet, I'm also told they were naked and in shackles.

After the Reconstruction era ended in 1877, white Southerners regained control over state governments, claiming corruption on the part of black legislators and "carpetbaggers." Was it really as bad as they claimed, or was it just their cover for reasserting white supremacy?

I'm seeking a letter written June 13, 1781 from Gen. Thomas Sumter to Gen. Nathanael Greene. Historian Lyman Draper transcribed this letter in the mid 1800s and said it belonged to "C. King of Jamaica L.I." I can't find any info on a C. King document collection. Full text below.
