Is there an easy way to find scholarly reviews of “popular” history books? It seems like half the history section at Barnes and Noble and other stores is sketchy at best.

Almost every new Popular History book has a review blurb from the same 20-30 other popular history writers (Niall Ferguson, Andrew roberts etc…) on the cover. Do these guys read every history book that comes out or are they paid to write good reviews?

Why are the “household names” of the Thirty Years War (Tilly, Wallenstein, adolphus) from the First half of the war? Why didn’t figures from the last 15 years get as famous?
