I have the impression that, in the previous century, Rome often rivaled Hollywood. Sphagetti Westerns and Gialli are definitely major influences in movies even to this day. So, what exactly happened to the Italian film industry?

Boys naturally outnumber girls at birth and until modern medicine childbirth had a very high mortality rate. The sex ratio of most societies was probably skewed heavily towards males. How did pre-modern civilizations deal with this contingent of men that would never be able to reproduce?
