After the defeat of the kingdom of Jerusalem at the battle of Hattin, as far as we know, the crusaders, knights among them, who surrendered were taken prisoner and later sold as slaves. Is there any hint to what happened to said knights afterwards?

In the communist manifesto (I. bourgeois and proletarians) Marx when describing the arrangement of society in the past he writes "In ancient Rome we have patricians, knights. Plebeians, slaves;(...)". Why does he place knights in ancient Rome?
