Why is it that The Battle of Gallipoli in 1915 has become such a source of nationalism for Australia, New Zealand, and maybe less so Ireland and Turkey?

Ukraine seems to be divided in a pro-European and a pro-Russian part. This correlates (very roughly) with the east-west division of the dominant language, namely Ukrainian in the west, Russian in the east. I know Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union, but what explains this division?
