Who invented the concept of 'hit points'? Do they predate the invention of traditional table-top role-playing games?

The Vulgate/KJV and other pre-modern Christian texts have no problem referencing sirens, griffons, unicorns, and so on, but these references have been expunged from contemporary Biblical translations. Was this a concerted effort? Which version is more accurate to the original?
