Why do humans punch and kick as a primary defense, when we have teeth and nails capable of causing more damage? When did this initially change from other animals?

You know how female animals, especially birds, choose a mate based on his color, the way he dances etc...? When their species become severely endangered, would the female still deny a perfectly fertile male just because those factors don't impress her?
