Public and commercial buildings built in the US from the mid 19th century up until around the 1940s seem to be way more ornate and built with nicer materials than structures today. Why do our modern buildings looks so much cheaper and cookie-cutter when we are much more advanced and wealthy?

Why did dumbells and barbells develop with spheres/circular discs for weights, instead of more angular shapes? Besides the danger of letting heavy weights roll, wouldn't the round shapes also be harder to make?

I read somewhere that pre-war Race Riots in America often consisted of attacks on one racial group by another, whereas 'modern' race riots are characterized by a localized racial group participating in general destruction of property/looting. Is this true? If so, how and why did this change?
