According to Martin Scorsese, Travis Bickle's mohawk in Taxi Driver was inspired by a Vietnam War vet who said certain types of soldiers would cut their hair that way to signify they were on a "special type of mission" and people knew to avoid them. Is there any record of soldiers doing this?

Dr. Tudor-Craig explains that a painting of King Richard III was altered by the Tudors to make him look disabled and villainous, so that his successor, Henry VII, would look more legitimate. Was this common, and are there other examples of this sort of subtle propaganda? (video included)
