The fact that what our eyes see, is actually real is confirmed via photography, what we hear is confirmed via recordings. How do we confirm the sense of touch?

Is there a phenomenon where you can smell the same thing even though you are no longer in its vicinity? E.g you have been in a room which has recently been painted but you're in a different place but can still smell the paint?
