At what point did “middle class people in that town/county/region/state/country believed ‘XYZ’” become a trope in documentaries for “the opinion of everyone at that time”? Or is that a sign of the times NOW for “history” professionals?

I’ve heard that Abraham Lincoln’s voice didn’t necessarily match his stature. Do you know of other historical figures whose voice didn’t match their post, position, power, or size?

It seems historians are more empathetic (or at least can minimally understand the motivations of people) toward all parties involved in historical geopolitics. Is this only a retrospective advantage or is it in-use as they live their educational careers and lives today?
