Rolling Stone writer Langdon Winner said that the release of the Beatles album Sgt Pepper was "the closest Western Civilization has to unity since the Congress of Vienna". Was this an exaggeration and even so, was Sgt Pepper really a cultural and social phenomenon outside the music realm ?
