Are scientists still working on cures or better treatments for ailments that are generally accepted to be treatable but incurable? e.g. Psoriasis, Asthma, Hayfever? Has there been any significant progress recently in any of these (or other) illnesses?

Do we have the technology to genetically alter the Covid-19 virus and spread a new, less fatal, but more contagious strain? Would this be a scientifically viable (if ethically questionable) option?
