If we took a group of homo sapiens, split them into two, and isolated them from each other (and us), how many generations would it take before they would no longer be considered homo sapiens, and how many more before the two groups would be unable to cross-breed?

I have a rigid piece of material that's 500,000 miles long. I pull or push on this material in Morse code. If someone is on the receiving end of this, do they get the information instantly, and have I just broken the laws of physics by transferring information at faster than light speed?
