I'm reading a Dawkins book and on page 78 he writes about cutting a piece of gold in half repeatedly. Eventually we get an atom of gold. So, I'm wondering, how many times do we have to cut one gram of gold in half to get down to one atom?

We can see yellow even though we do not have visual receptors for yellow. Why can't we see ultraviolet and infrared?

My first question was how many times must we cut a gram of gold to get down to one atom. The answer appears to be about 71 times. So, here is my next question. What do we get when we cut that atom of gold in half?
