Why does my mp3 player sound louder when it's in a cup or a bucket?

After not spending more than a few minutes in the woods and finding several ticks on me I started wondering about how the ticks "found" me. Are these lucky ticks to find a host or are there hundreds/thousands or more that I encounter and these are the few that were able to hang on?
