How did the generation of hippies change their political opinions, from the 60's to today? How does their position on the political spectrum, as senior citizens, differ from that of other sub group of senior citizens, who were more conservative at the time of their young adulthood, e.g., boomers?

It's 1861. I'm a U.S. diplomat to a European country. I'm from a Southern state which just seceded from the union. Would I be allowed to quit my job? Can I secretly work for confederate? If I'm a Unionist, will my loyalty be questioned in the coming years during Civil War?
