'Reality' is based on the assumption that randomness exists in nature. How does science, which is based on laws, reconcile with randomness?

Water 'waves' are composed of water molecules in motion, sound waves are composed of moving air molecules. But when a molecule itself behaves as a wave e.g. in the double slit experiment, what 'stuff' is the wave composed of?
