Does the distance from the Earth to the sun increase or decrease on average over time? Could this be one reason we've had the third hottest year in a row, and is this taken into account?

I watched an unblinking star, move in a sinusoidal path from the southwestern sky to the northeastern sky before going behind the tree line in about 10-12 seconds. Not a plane, or a satellite. Any ideas what that would be?
