Is there anything that could replace electricity?

We are all taught to drive with our hands at 10 and 2 but steering wheels in cars are most comfortable if our hands are at 9 and 3 (struts are shaped like a 'T' not a 'Y', ergonomic grooves, various finger controls, paddle shifters, etc). Why is there a difference?
