In Wuthering Heights (~1845, Bronte) many of the characters die from "weakness" "heartache" etc at a very young age. How did people in the mid 1800s supposed a person died. What was actually killing these people?

If I add 100ml of 10 degrees celcius water to 100ml 30 degree celcius water will I have 200ml of 15 degree water or will it be higher or lower? Does temperature average out exactly or is heat transfer non linear?
