[EU] Batman's interactions with the Joker almost seemed scripted: The Joker does something nefarious, Batman refuses to kill him, the Joker gets thrown in jail and inevitably escapes, rinse and repeat. So nobody, least of all Batman, knew what to do when the Joker died in a random car accident.
