If pain is just our body and brain telling us that a certain action or activity is damaging or dangerous, why can't we shut the pain off when that signal does us no good? Torture, prolonged injury, etc.

When I was very young I would experience a sensation of time slowing down, and everything would get all blurry and sharp at the same time. Can anyone explain this?
