Time travel experiments showed you really can't change the future by traveling to the past, as long as you don't cross paths with yourself. So travel within your lifetime is prohibited. You go back 500 years and unexpectedly encounter a previous incarnation. Oops.

You die in an auto accident. Turns out 'the afterlife' is reality and Earth is a virtual reality prison. Since you didn't 'die' of natural causes, you didn't finish your sentence and will be sent back. You're being processed for 'reincarnation' when you manage to escape.
