This is really more a technical question, but I just walked past a veterans bar with a flak gun displayed outside and I was wondering if anyone knew why the barrel opened up at the end, when that would seem to adversely affect accuracy?

If I was a European explorer/traveller in the 1500s, while in the Americas or India, would I be particularly conscious of time zones, or did it take until telegraphs/faster transportation to notice/care about the fact that midday somewhere can be midnight elsewhere?
