When selecting biographies, articles, etc. on heavily mythologized figures such as George Washington, Macarthur, Yamomoto, etc, what is the best way to make sure what you're reading is actually accurate?

[WP] The asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs was actually a stray shell from a capital ship in a nearby space battle. You are the captain on one of the ships involved said battle, and got to witness the carnage caused on the planet. Describe what you see, and any effects it had on the battle.
