are STD's more widespread than they were in the previous generation (say the 50s thru 80s) or have medical advances simply allowed us to become aware of them?

After I pull all-nighters, my eyes seem to force REM to happen when I close them for sleep, to the point that I have to re-open them to still the dizziness caused by the darkness spinning. This happens frequently over the course of a semester. Is this actually REM? Or something else?
