Throughout my elementary, junior high, and high school years, Asia was always suspiciously absent when studying "World History." Why is that? And as a recovering ignoramus, where could I find a good primer on the eastern empires?

[x-post from /r/documentaries] Are there any investigative documentaries that go into how American history books are made? Who decides what historical events gets told, and how they get away with putting so much misinformation in the typical American student's history book?
