Is there an historical reason the US northeast and west coast became liberal strongholds? Given its Puritanical origins, how did New England get to be so liberal?

The causes of celebration for US Independence Day seem a bit mushy to me. Has the shift from commemorating the Declaration of Independence to commemorating veterans of all wars come recently? Or has it been another Veteran's/Memorial Day potpourri since the war of 1812 (or earlier)?
