Early Christianity in the Roman Empire was marked by sharp disagreements as to doctrine. Were there similar disagreements in pre-Christian Roman religions? Were ecumenical councils to resolve these doctrinal disputes based on any Roman precedent?

A common trope from politicians is that an upcoming election is particularly important: "the most important in our lifetime", "will shape a generation", etc. Have politicians ever acknowledged the alternative, that the stakes in a particular election are actually pretty low?
